They’re not a political party, but the Democratic Socialists of America are working overtime to put in place local school board members who share their goals of poisoning the next generation with radical, immoral, and flawed ideologies that are anathema to the U.S. Constitution, a free market economy, and a free society.
A report released by parents’ rights group Parents Defending Education reveals that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are seeking to take over school boards and teachers’ unions in order to push the Green New Deal, Critical Race Theory, gender affirmation for children and other pro-LGBT policies, and the destruction of capitalism.
PDE posted an in-depth look at DSA and its objectives in education on December 19 and showed that DSA-supported candidates have already run for school board or are currently running in 12 states.
DSA, by its own description, is not a political party. It is a political activist organization that seeks to end capitalism, which it sees an exploitative system put in place by the “owning class.” Its members desire to eliminate private profit and private ownership and instead want publicly controlled “energy, production, and transportation.”
They also envision a “humane social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning, equitable distribution, feminism, racial equality, and non-oppressive relationships.” It claims that “socialism is the complete realization of democracy.”
As the Parents Defending Education report notes, DSA is overtly political, is aligned with other radical Marxist groups, including Black Lives Matter, and has numerous policy positions that it seeks to push on children in school, most notably on gender and sexuality; racism; the Green New Deal; and Palestine and Israel.
For example, the DSA’s Los Angeles chapter describes itself as being “against a pro-capitalist pedagogy that reinforces oppressive socio-economic relationships and structures through a deliberately narrow curriculum designed to uphold American imperialism.”
Among its goals are to:
- “Reinstate and seek new progressive property taxes that redistribute funds from high-earning to low-income areas to pay for public schools”;
- “Protect and expand student rights to self organize and self advocate for a better quality education system and social and economic justice, among other issues”;
- “Support implementation of a broad anti-racist and anti-imperialist ethnic studies school curriculum”; and
- “Support the right to hold student-led social and economic justice actions on K-12, community college, trade school, and college and university campuses in LA.”
As for DSA’s views on gender and sexuality, the group demands, among other things, free birth control for all; free abortion on demand; comprehensive sex education taught in schools; access to gender-affirming care for trans minors “without parental consent”; to “fully decriminalize sex work nationwide”; and to end conversion therapy and provide stronger supportive care for minors whose families abandon them.”
And in supporting the Green New Deal, DSA pushes a number of specific goals. These include decarbonizing the economy within a decade; democratizing control over major energy systems and resources; ensuring that land and resources are “prioritized for building resilient communities and ecosystems for the many, not the few”; demilitarizing, decolonizing, and striving for a future of international solidarity and cooperation toward global climate justice”; and redistributing resources from the “worst producers.”
DSA also supports Palestinians and its various “resistance” tactics and opposes Israel and “Zionism.”
At its 2023 National Convention, DSA passed a resolution to push and support DSA candidates (of various political party affiliations, including Independent, Democrat, Green, and others) for local school boards. The DSA claims that doing so is important to stop conservatives from organizing and is an attempt to “break” them at the local level.
The resolution stated:
“One of the main tactics of the far right at present is to conduct takeovers of school boards in order to attack trans and queer youths, suppress intellectual freedom, and gut the public school system….[the] DSA commits to running candidates in school board races and to fight ring wing [sic] and neoliberal attacks on public schools by bringing together DSA, teachers, support staff and education
worker unions, and grassroots parent and student groups behind candidates dedicated to building the working class [sic] movement.”
Over the last several years, DSA-backed candidates have won school board races and even school board presidencies. The PDE report includes a partial list of those who have run or are currently running in states like California, Colorado, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
PDE also exposed DSA members who were members of teachers’ unions in California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Oregon.
Erika Sanzi, outreach director for Parents Defending Education, said in a statement,
“The Democratic Socialists of America, or DSA, has long had the goal of using the K-12 system as a way to proselytize to a captive audience of other people’s children…. “They [the DSA] have very deliberately partnered with teachers unions and worked to get on school boards and into classrooms and then they exploit these positions to push politically charged and even radical content on students.”

Central planning, command economy, socialism, communism, Marxism, wokeness — whichever descriptor or label is used, the underlying immoral and inherently flawed ideology is the same. The demands and ideas put forth by the DSA have been implemented in numerous countries and all to disastrous effect. The idea starts with platitudes about “the greater good,” “collective ownership,” “equity,” and “human flourishing” but always ends with censorship, prison camps, and atrocities.
The DSA movement aligns very well with communist principles. This is a group that wants to eradicate the principles of private property and private business; forcibly redistribute wealth based on a Marxist intersectional matrix of oppressor and oppressed groups; and give the government and its activist allies full control of all resources in a cultural, political, and anti-God revolution. And it clearly follows the communist blueprint of using the classroom to indoctrinate children, undermine and discredit parental authority, and recruit new ideological adherents.
So, if you ever thought the parents’ rights advocates were exaggerating about the “commies in the public school system,” you can rest assured that they weren’t. DSA is a group that actually refers to its members as “comrade” and revels in the idea of “radicalizing” traditional institutions and all manner of political activity. It also insists that “transformational change in society does not come from moral righteousness or a checklist of policy positions, but from growing and wielding power” and that its approach to socialism is unique from anything tried before so it, therefore, unlike others, will actually achieve its utopian goals of equity and a classless society.
The Left is, once again, telling America exactly what it believes and what it wants to do: It wants to break the ability of Christians, conservatives, and even moderates to influence society. It wants to indoctrinate your child into a neo-Marxist, hypersexualized, unaccountable cult, and it wants to overthrow the American form of government and the American way of life. This isn’t a conspiracy theory; these are the DSA’s stated goals and they are organizing, fundraising, lobbying, and supporting candidates to make it happen.
Conservatives and Christians must recognize that there is a war going on in America over what values our children will learn and carry into the future. As such, they too must get involved in their local schools and conservative parental rights’ groups like Parents Defending Education and do their part to resist this communist plot. The freedom of the next generation is truly at stake.
The Church must be involved in public discourse and influence. That’s why we write — so our readers can be equipped to understand and pursue righteous change in the world. For more timely, informative, and faith-based content, subscribe to the Standing for Freedom Center newsletter.
