Planned Parenthood raked in a record-breaking $2 billion in revenue while performing 402,000 abortions in 2023. So, why are taxpayer dollars being used to bankroll and enable a powerful industry that profits from ending innocent lives?
Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, recently reported over $2 billion in revenue while performing a record-breaking 402,000 abortions in a single year.
These staggering numbers, released in the organization’s latest annual report, raise an urgent question: Why are American taxpayers continuing to subsidize an organization that profits from ending innocent human lives?
Supporters of Planned Parenthood often emphasize the array of medical services it claims to offer, such as cancer screenings, contraception, and STD testing. Yet the reality, shown in this new report, is that abortion is not merely one of many services — it is the dominant feature of Planned Parenthood’s business model.
The financial windfall accompanying this surge in abortions is equally troubling. With more than $2 billion in revenue, Planned Parenthood is not merely a health care provider; it is a political and cultural powerhouse operating under the guise of nonprofit status.
This organization, which has long received hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars annually, can sustain itself without public funding. Yet it continues to benefit from the federal trough while expanding its abortion services.
Federal law currently prohibits direct funding of abortion procedures through Medicaid and Title X programs. However, these restrictions are not as effective as they may appear. When Planned Parenthood receives federal funds for other services, it frees up internal resources to be redirected toward abortion-related infrastructure, including facilities, administrative salaries, training, and lobbying. In effect, taxpayer dollars are underwriting the very system that allows abortion services to continue.
Further, according to the recent report from Planned Parenthood, the organization’s affiliates spent $3.4 million last year assisting over 12,500 women with travel-related expenses for abortions through its “patient navigation program.”
This setup creates an ethical conflict for millions of Americans who oppose abortion. Public funds, drawn from citizens with a wide range of religious and moral beliefs, should not be used in ways that contradict the deeply held values of so many.
It is one thing to permit legal abortion within the framework of U.S. law; it is quite another to require citizens to pay for the operations of an organization that thrives on ending the lives of children in the womb. No one should be forced to fund this death movement, even indirectly, in the destruction of preborn children.
Supporters of Planned Parenthood argue that defunding the organization would drastically reduce access to health care, especially for low-income women. This concern is vastly overstated.
According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, there are over 13,000 federally qualified health centers across the United States. These centers outnumber Planned Parenthood locations more than 20 to 1 and serve millions of patients each year — without performing abortions.
These community health centers offer a wide range of services, including cancer screenings, family planning, prenatal care, and pediatrics. In contrast to Planned Parenthood, their mission is to care for the whole patient, regardless of age or stage of life, and without pushing ideological agendas or prioritizing controversial procedures. Redirecting federal funds from Planned Parenthood to these providers would enhance health care for women, especially in rural and underserved communities.
Planned Parenthood’s vast resources and deep-pocketed donors, including billionaire philanthropists and major corporations, also suggest that it does not need taxpayer support to function. If the public truly supports the organization’s mission, private donations should be sufficient to sustain its operations. The organization received over $700 million in private contributions in its most recent annual report.
As Charlotte Lozier Institute associate scholar Jeanneane Maxon concluded in her study of Planned Parenthood’s finances, “Despite messaging to the contrary, Planned Parenthood prioritizes abortion above all else. Any form of government money to Planned Parenthood only serves to support its advocacy and provision of abortion.”
Planned Parenthood’s political activism is another reason to question its continued receipt of federal funds. The organization has evolved into a powerful lobbying entity, pouring millions into campaigns, public relations efforts, and legal challenges aimed at expanding abortion access and defeating pro-life legislation.
Even if not directly used for these activities, taxpayer dollars allow the organization to offset costs elsewhere and strengthen its political influence. This dynamic creates a serious conflict of interest in the national debate over abortion.
The moral issue, however, remains central. At its core, abortion is a matter of life and death. Scientific advances continue to affirm the humanity of the preborn child. Ultrasounds show a baby’s heartbeats, facial expressions, and even signs of pain within the womb. Each of the 402,000 abortions performed by Planned Parenthood last year ended a unique, irreplaceable life. That loss cannot be brushed aside with euphemisms like “reproductive health care” or “averted births.”
The emotional toll abortion takes on women cannot be overlooked. Numerous personal testimonies and studies reveal that many women suffer deep regret, depression, and psychological trauma following abortion. Rather than empowering women, organizations like Planned Parenthood can provide a false promise of freedom while concealing the long-term consequences. Defunding the organization would help shift our national priorities toward a model of support that embraces both mother and child.
Our government should invest in services that support women through unexpected pregnancies, such as maternity homes, adoption agencies, and counseling services. These alternatives uphold the sanctity of life and promote a culture of compassion and responsibility. Every dollar spent affirming life affirms the dignity and worth of every human being.
Congress has the authority and the obligation to act. Numerous efforts in the past to shift funding away from Planned Parenthood have failed, often due to political maneuvering and fear of public backlash. But the time is right for principled leadership that upholds the sanctity of human life.
The federal government must no longer serve as a financial crutch — and enabler — for Planned Parenthood. The organization’s record-high abortion numbers and billion-dollar revenues demonstrate that it is not a struggling health care provider in need of rescue. It is a politically motivated business that profits from ending human life.
Let us stop pretending that Planned Parenthood is just another health clinic. It’s not. It’s the leading provider of abortion in the United States, responsible for the deaths of over 400,000 preborn children last year alone. Defunding Planned Parenthood is a necessary step toward reclaiming the soul of our nation.
