A voter in West Virginia is eligible to vote absentee in an election if he or she cannot make it to the polls on Election Day for one of the following reasons:
• They will be “working or traveling all 13 days” prior to Election Day, or their “hours of employment make voting impossible
• They “live another place during part of the year,” or they have “been given a job assignment which requires them to live outside of their county or West Virginia.”
• They have “health problems or a physical disability,” or They have “been hospitalized because of an emergency and will be in the hospital or care facility seven days leading up to and including Election Day.”
• They attend school away from home, or they are under incarceration or detention in jail or in home (not for any felony, treason or bribery in an election).
West Virginia Registration Deadline
• In-Person: 21 days before Election Day.
• By Mail: Postmarked 21 days before Election Day.
• Online: 21 days before Election Day.
West Virginia Registration Requirements
To register to vote in West Virginia you must:
• be a citizen of the United States
• live in West Virginia at the above address
• be 18 years old, or to vote in the primary be 17 years old and turning 18 before the general election
• not be in jail or on parole for a felony conviction
• not be under conviction, probation, or parole for a felony, treason or election bribery
• not have been judged “mentally incompetent” in a court of competent jurisdiction
