At a minimum, two victims are gravely impacted by an abortion: the unborn child and the mother. Abortion ends the life of the unborn and haunts the life of his or her mother. The heart of Christ and His attribute of justice demands that His bride, the body of believers, take a holistic approach to ending the grievous injustice of abortion.
It has been nearly 50 years since Roe v. Wade was handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court. The landmark ruling permitted the termination of unborn babies in what should be the safest place they’ll ever live — their mother’s womb.
Since the 1973 ruling, approximately 60 million people who should be enjoying a sunrise, sitting in class, or raising their own families are missing.
As believers in Christ, we should care for the things that are close to His heart. Jesus Himself described how valuable all people are to God in Matthew 10:31. If He notices when a sparrow falls, how much greater is His concern for the most innocent among us?
We should be praying that the horror of abortion comes to an end. We should be praying that every baby be given a chance to live.
Here are five specific ways you can be praying in regard to abortion:
As the Senate works to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, the result could be just what the pro-life movement needs to tip the scales and finally overturn Roe v. Wade. This isn’t frail optimism — even the pro-choice community is heralding their fear of a Roe overturn, which would undo federal judicial precedent and send the issue back to the state legislatures. When Justice Brett Kavanaugh was nominated, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., released a six-paragraph statement of opposition. Five of the paragraphs mentioned his fear that the right to an abortion would be compromised. Some will respond to this point by saying we need to change hearts instead of legislating. But that is a false dichotomy, as legislation and changing hearts are not incompatible. Consider the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.:
“It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me and I think that is pretty important, also.”
In many cases, mothers choose to undergo abortions because they don’t have support from their partners or their parents. In the moment, the fear and anxiety over the responsibility of supporting a child when she can barely support herself is overwhelming. We need to be praying that the Church will continue to do our part to make expectant mothers feel the love and support they need to choose life for their baby.
We are living in a generation of people who don’t know how to be parents. Instead of being recognized as a great gift from God, parenting is often viewed as a burden or as a career inhibitor. This was not God’s intention for this sacred role. Pray that parenting will be seen as it truly is — a role to be treasured. The more our society sees the value in parenting, the more they will recognize the repugnance of abortion.
Right now, abortion is not only seen as acceptable but also as brave. It is characterized as essential and even beneficial for many women and has been judicially ruled as a basic human right. But in reality, abortion is the systematic killing of an unborn child. The depravity of the human heart is on grand display in justifying and, in some cases, celebrating this horrific act. We must pray that God breaks the hearts of those who support abortion to the point where they recognize their sin in supporting abortion, their need for a savior, and a need for their reversal in their public advocacy.
So many people would love to have children but aren’t able to have children of their own. Adoption is the greater alternative. We should be praying that the hearts of these mothers are turned toward adoption for the sake of their child and the desiring parents.
Turning our society away from abortion is a daunting task until we remember that the God we pray to is the God who also freed the Israelites from a tyrannical leader, split the sea, shut the mouths of lions, and conquered sin.
Believe in the power of prayer and pray that abortion will finally come to an end.
