Governor Northam signs 49 bills into law including one that makes abortions more available

John Simmons /

Everyone wants life to go back to normal. Everyone wants to hug friends without worrying they will spread a deadly virus, to go support their favorite local restaurants and to go for walks on the beach or in a park without fear of being arrested.

Life amidst the COVID-19 quarantine has given us time to rest and reflect and see many of the precious gifts God has given us.

However, quarantine did not stop Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam from passing legislation that makes the radical and abominable practice of abortion easier for women to obtain. On top of bills that restrict gun rights, allow Virginians to vote without a voter ID and LGBTQ rights, The Reproductive Health Protection Act, passed on April 10 and effective July 1, will revoke many prerequisites for women seeking an abortion:

The legislation repeals regulations mandating those seeking an abortion to get an ultrasound at least 24 hours prior to undergoing the procedure and receive counseling on alternatives to abortion. It also revokes requirements saying facilities that provide more than five abortions per year be designated as hospitals and that only physicians provide abortions during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Abortion, one of the greatest sins in our country’s history, just became easier for women to obtain. Undoubtedly, the number of innocent babies killed in Old Dominion will dramatically increase come summer.

This should make the stomachs of every Christian churn.

Democrats continue to advance their ugly policies in the war for life. With each new legislation passed, more and more babies will never experience life. And with each horrific abortion performed, America’s hands will continue to drip with the blood of innocent lives.

The battle is raging in Virginia. We must use our gifts to turn the tide of this war. Not all of us will be politicians, doctors or lawyers. But all of us have the power to vote for those who stand for life. Above all else, we must pray.

All the political ads, the debates won, marches for life and policies passed are of little effect without the power of God. Only our sovereign Lord can change the hearts of men to see the evils they are committing and turn them towards repentance.

Our prayers have great affects in this war for life. The Bible declares that “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working” (James 5:16).

No matter where we are, we can pray for our nation and our leaders in this war for life. Take meaningful and intentional time in God’s Word and in prayer to beseech our Lord for the United States. We must ask ourselves, “Is it worth rushing back to our normal lives if we neglect the evils happening in our backyards?”
